The Do's And Don'ts Of Carpet Steam Cleaning

The Do's And Don'ts Of Carpet Steam Cleaning

The majority of carpets are made in a way so that they are stain resistant. They are made stain resistant by treating them with a combination of chemicals that adds a thin protective coat over the carpet. However, over a period of time this thin layer or coat will erode which makes the carpet more prone to stains. There are some fibers that hold on to stains more strongly than others which is why carpet steam cleaning happens to be the best way to clean both new and old carpets. That said many people who use steam cleaners at home end up making a number of mistakes which makes the problem even worse. Below we look at a few things you should and shouldn’t do when cleaning carpets.

Remove dust from the carpet

Most people start off with the assumption that their steam cleaner will remove everything. While this may be true to some extent the fact is that it can also drive dirt and dust which is currently on the surface of your carpet deep into its fibers. This will make them even more difficult to remove and you’ll need to call in a professional cleaner to do the removal for you. Vacuum the carpet you intend on cleaning at least twice prior to steam cleaning.

Do not use strong chemicals

Carpet steam cleaning is meant to be done without the use of strong chemicals. However, the problem that many people face is that their domestic cleaners are not always effective against old stains. So, they assume that adding a strong stain removing chemical to the water in their cleaner will help them remove the stain. This is not the case and many times it can end up doing more damage than good to your carpet. If there is a stubborn stain that you need to clean then first test a stain removing fluid on a small inconspicuous part of your carpet, if it does not eat away the color then use it to remove the stain prior to steam cleaning. This will help prevent you from doing extensive damage to your carpet.

When using chemicals you need to make sure that you use ones that do not render your carpet’s warranty void. Visit the carpet seller’s website or read the label of the carpet to determine which chemicals are permitted and which are not.

Add some baking soda to your steam cleaner

In most cases the steam from your steam cleaner is enough to remove bacteria and germs from your carpet. Just water from your tap is all you may need to make your carpet look as good as new. But if you still experience a slight odor from your carpet or see signs of stains you may want to add a spoon of baking soda to your carpet cleaning machine. Backing soda helps to remove odor as well as remove certain types of stains. The only thing you need to be careful of is to not add more than a teaspoon.

Do not steam clean on humid days

You should avoid steam cleaning your carpets on hot and humid summer days or days when it’s particularly cold. The best time to steam clean is during dry and hot days because it will be easier to air your carpet and it will dry faster. This will also prevent you from having a somewhat steamy house as a result of your cleaning efforts.

Make sure to check the steam’s temperature

Carpet steam cleaning can be dangerous because many cleaners allow for you to vary the temperature of the steam. Ideally, you’ll want to keep the temperature enough to generate lots of steam but not burn the fibers of the carpet. Run the cleaner on a small section of the carpet and then feel it from underneath, if you can feel the heat underneath then the steam is at the right temperature. If the underneath feels very hot then you need to dial down the temperature slightly. Always Fresh carpet recommends that people buy cleaners that do not have a variable dial that way they don’t have to worry about the temperature of the steam.
